Brazilian Tax Calendar for Foreigners and Expats: 2026 Deadlines

By Ruben Camerlynck | Last reviewed: 8 September 2026

Brazil does not have one tax deadline that covers every foreign resident, expat or non-resident. The annual IRPF return is only one part of the calendar. A Brazilian tax resident with income from abroad may have monthly Carnê-Leão payments; an investor may have capital-gains or variable-income deadlines; a resident with substantial foreign assets may also need CBE; a person leaving Brazil has definitive-departure filings; and an owner of rural property may need DITR.

Quick answer For 2026, the individual income tax return for calendar year 2025 was filed from 23 March to 29 May. The annual CBE for foreign assets held on 31 December 2025 ran from 15 February to 6 April. DITR 2026 runs from 10 August to 30 September. Monthly tax, when applicable, is generally due by the last business day of the month after the income was received or the taxable transaction occurred. Departure filings and state or municipal taxes have separate dates.
2026 status as of 6 September The regular IRPF 2026 and annual CBE deadlines have passed. DITR 2026 is open until 30 September, and recurring monthly obligations continue throughout the year. A missed deadline should normally be regularized rather than postponed until the next filing season.
Use the date on the official rule, not your local time zone Federal online filing deadlines are normally stated in Brasília time. Tax payments may also depend on banking cut-off times. Prepare and transmit before the final day, especially when filing from another country.

First identify which calendar applies to you

Nationality, CPF ownership and immigration status do not by themselves determine the correct tax calendar. The starting point is whether you are a Brazilian tax resident on the relevant date, followed by the income, assets and transactions involved.

Your situationDeadlines most likely to matterFirst question to resolve
Employee paid only by a Brazilian employerAnnual IRPF, plus any tax balance or instalmentsDid you meet a filing criterion for the calendar year?
Resident receiving salary, freelance income, pension or rent from abroadMonthly Carnê-Leão, annual IRPF and possibly CBEOn what date did Brazilian tax residence begin?
Resident selling property, shares or another assetTransaction-month calculation, payment in the following month and annual reportingIs there a taxable gain, exemption or special regime?
Resident holding substantial foreign assetsAnnual or quarterly CBE in addition to IRPFWhat was the total value at the relevant BCB base date?
Person who moved to Brazil during 2026Monthly obligations from the residence date; first annual return normally in 2027 if requiredWhich event triggered residence and on what exact date?
Person leaving Brazil permanentlyCommunication and Definitive Departure Income Tax Return, plus final resident-period taxWas the departure permanent from day one or did non-residence arise after 12 months?
Non-resident receiving Brazilian-source incomeWithholding or definitive taxation at source; event-specific filingsHas the payer been correctly informed of non-resident status?
Owner of Brazilian rural propertyDITR and ITR payment datesAre you the person legally required to file, and does an exemption apply?

A person can fall into several rows at once. For example, a foreign executive may receive overseas salary, hold a foreign brokerage account, sell an asset and leave Brazil in the same year. A useful calendar therefore starts with a residence timeline and a list of income and transactions, not with the annual IRPF deadline alone.

Monthly obligations: the deadlines most often missed

Many foreign clients first learn about their Brazilian obligations during the annual return. By then, monthly payment dates may already have passed. The annual return reconciles the year; it does not erase a tax that should have been calculated and paid earlier.

Carnê-Leão on applicable income from abroad or individuals

A Brazilian tax resident may need Carnê-Leão for taxable income received from abroad or from another individual. Common examples include foreign salary, freelance or professional income, foreign pensions and rent received from an individual, depending on the facts.

The calculation follows the month of actual receipt. When tax is due, Receita’s current guidance requires payment by the last business day of the following month, normally under revenue code 0190. The annual IRPF return later imports or reconciles those monthly entries.

Example: applicable foreign income received on 18 August 2026 belongs to the August calculation. The related Carnê-Leão payment is normally due by the last business day of September, not when the 2027 annual return is filed.

Capital gains

A taxable gain on the sale of property or another asset can create a payment before the annual return. The calculation depends on the asset, residence status, acquisition history, transaction date, exemptions and whether the price is received in instalments. As a general calendar rule, tax on a gain is commonly due by the last business day of the month after the sale or the relevant receipt, but special rules must be checked before relying on that date.

Variable income and exchange transactions

Taxable net results from applicable stock-exchange or other variable-income transactions are also normally calculated monthly and paid in the following month. Brazilian brokers may supply information, but the taxpayer remains responsible for reconciling transactions, withholding, losses and DARFs.

Monthly information obligations involving cryptoassets

Some cryptoasset transactions create a monthly information return when the individual is responsible for reporting under Receita’s rules. This is distinct from the annual asset entry and from any tax on a gain. Because the reporting scope and platform rules can change, check the current Receita service whenever transactions occur outside the information flow of a Brazilian exchange.

Brazilian-source income received as a non-resident

A non-resident usually does not wait for an annual resident return to settle Brazilian-source income. The Brazilian payer or legal representative may have to apply withholding or definitive taxation when the payment occurs. Inform banks, tenants, companies and other payers promptly after a definitive departure; correcting the treatment months later is more difficult than applying the right status from the start.

Brazilian tax calendar 2026, month by month

The monthly list combines legal filing dates with practical preparation points. A planning action is labelled as such and should not be confused with a statutory deadline.

January 2026: close the 2025 records

  • Save 31 December 2025 balances for Brazilian and foreign bank, brokerage, pension and investment accounts.
  • Record ownership and acquisition-cost information for property, companies, trusts and other structures.
  • Determine whether foreign assets at the year-end base date may trigger annual CBE.
  • Reconcile December income and transactions whose tax falls due in January.

This is a preparation month rather than a single universal filing deadline. The quality of the December 31 snapshot strongly affects both the annual IRPF asset schedule and CBE analysis.

February 2026: CBE opens and departure communication closes

  • 15 February: the 2026 annual CBE window opened for assets held on 31 December 2025.
  • 28 February: final date for the Communication of Definitive Departure relating to a permanent departure in 2025.
  • Collect Brazilian income reports and foreign year-end statements for IRPF preparation.
  • Reconcile January monthly tax for payment by the last business day of February where applicable.

The communication is not the same as the Definitive Departure Income Tax Return. Both can be required, and Brazilian income payers should also be informed of the non-resident status.

March 2026: IRPF filing begins

  • 23 March: Receita opened the IRPF 2026 filing period for calendar year 2025.
  • 31 March: first-quarter CBE base date for residents at or above the quarterly threshold.
  • Check the pre-filled return against original documents rather than treating it as complete.
  • Reconcile February monthly obligations.

Foreign income, overseas assets and residence-date distinctions may not appear correctly or completely in pre-filled data. International taxpayers should build the return from source records and use pre-filled information as a reconciliation aid.

April 2026: annual CBE deadline and first-quarter window

  • 6 April: adjusted closing date for annual CBE 2026.
  • 30 April: standard opening date for first-quarter CBE based on 31 March.
  • Continue IRPF review while there is time to resolve missing foreign documents.
  • Reconcile March monthly obligations.

CBE and IRPF are separate filings to different authorities. Reporting an account or company in one does not automatically satisfy the other.

May 2026: IRPF and 2025 departure returns close

  • 29 May: IRPF 2026 filing deadline, including for an individual physically outside Brazil.
  • 29 May: 2026 deadline for the Definitive Departure Income Tax Return relating to a qualifying departure in 2025.
  • 29 May: due date for the unique or first IRPF balance quota.
  • Reconcile April monthly obligations.

The online IRPF service closed at 23:59:59 Brasília time on the final day. Filing close to midnight from Europe, North America or Asia increases the risk of a time-zone or banking-cut-off mistake.

June 2026: quarterly CBE closes and IRPF instalments continue

  • 5 June: standard deadline for first-quarter CBE based on 31 March.
  • 30 June: second-quarter CBE base date for residents at or above the quarterly threshold.
  • Second IRPF quota falls due on the last business day of June for taxpayers who elected instalments.
  • Reconcile May monthly obligations.

IRPF quotas after the first include Selic interest accumulated under the annual-return rules plus 1% for the payment month, even when paid by their ordinary due dates.

July 2026: second-quarter CBE opens

  • 31 July: standard opening date for second-quarter CBE based on 30 June.
  • Third IRPF quota falls due on the last business day of July where applicable.
  • Reconcile June monthly obligations.
  • Prepare rural-property documents before DITR opens.

August 2026: DITR opens

  • 10 August: DITR 2026 filing period opened.
  • Fourth IRPF quota falls due on the last business day of August where applicable.
  • Reconcile July monthly obligations.
  • Owners of rural property should confirm CIB, CAR and ownership information before filing.

September 2026: DITR deadline

  • 5 September: standard closing date in the BCB rules for second-quarter CBE; verify any system adjustment where the date is not a business day.
  • 30 September: DITR 2026 filing deadline and due date for its unique or first quota.
  • 30 September: third-quarter CBE base date for residents at or above the quarterly threshold.
  • Fifth IRPF quota and August monthly obligations are due on the applicable final business day.

October 2026: third-quarter CBE opens

  • 31 October: standard opening date for third-quarter CBE based on 30 September.
  • Sixth IRPF quota falls due on the last business day of October where applicable.
  • Reconcile September monthly obligations.
  • Begin a year-end review of foreign income, tax credits and asset documentation.

November 2026: prepare the year-end position

  • Seventh IRPF quota falls due on the last business day of November where applicable.
  • Reconcile October monthly obligations.
  • Review missing Carnê-Leão months, unpaid DARFs and transactions before the year closes.
  • Confirm whether any gifts, inheritance or ownership changes create state or event-specific obligations.

Year-end planning should document real events; it should not retrospectively re-label income or transfers. Preserve contracts, bank evidence and acquisition histories before accounts or portals become harder to access.

December 2026: final CBE window and new asset snapshot

  • 5 December: standard closing date in BCB rules for third-quarter CBE; verify any operational adjustment where necessary.
  • The eighth and final IRPF quota falls due on the last business day of December for an eight-quota election.
  • 31 December: annual asset base date for IRPF 2027 preparation and possible CBE 2027.
  • Reconcile November monthly obligations and prepare for December payments due in January 2027.

Download complete year-end statements after the final transactions settle. Screenshots without account identification, currency or valuation date are often insufficient for a reliable cross-border filing.

IRPF 2026: annual return dates and payment calendar

The 2026 annual individual income tax return covered calendar year 2025. Receita set the filing period from 23 March to 29 May 2026. A person who was physically abroad had the same 29 May deadline.

Not every foreigner with a CPF had to file. Filing depends on Brazilian tax residence and the criteria for the relevant exercise. Conversely, a person who became resident during 2025 may have had to report foreign income and assets from the residence date even if the move occurred late in the year.

A balance due could be paid in up to eight monthly quotas, subject to minimum amounts. The unique or first quota was due on 29 May. Later quotas fall on the last business day of subsequent months and accrue the interest specified by Receita.

The regular deadline has passed, but the return can still be transmitted late. Late filing may generate a penalty, and unpaid tax has separate late-payment additions. See Late or Incorrect Brazilian Tax Return: How Foreigners Can Regularize It.

For filing criteria, documents and foreign-asset reporting, read Brazilian Income Tax Return for Foreigners: Who Must File, Deadlines and Documents.

CBE deadlines: a separate Banco Central calendar

CBE – the Declaration of Brazilian Capitals Abroad – is filed with Banco Central, not Receita Federal. It is an information declaration rather than an income tax return. It generally applies to individuals and entities resident in Brazil that hold assets abroad at or above the relevant threshold on a base date.

CBE typeThresholdBase dateStandard filing window
AnnualUS$1 million or more in qualifying foreign assets31 December15 February to 5 April of the following year; annual CBE 2026 closed on 6 April
First quarterUS$100 million or more31 March30 April to 5 June
Second quarterUS$100 million or more30 June31 July to 5 September
Third quarterUS$100 million or more30 September31 October to 5 December

Foreign accounts, investments, company interests, loans, property and other rights may be relevant. The threshold test and the value ultimately declared are not always identical, particularly for jointly held assets. Banco Central guidance should be applied to the actual ownership arrangement and valuation date.

A newcomer who becomes resident during 2026 should check the 31 December 2026 asset position for annual CBE 2027. A person who is already non-resident at the relevant base date generally falls outside the resident CBE population, but the residence change must be correctly established and documented.

Moving to Brazil during 2026: do not wait for the 2027 return

A mid-year move does not create a separate part-year annual return during 2026. The first annual filing is normally made in the following filing season if the person meets a filing criterion. However, monthly obligations can begin as soon as Brazilian tax residence starts.

The practical sequence is:

1. Establish the exact residence-start date.

2. Separate income received before and after that date.

3. Calculate applicable foreign or individual-source income month by month from the resident period.

4. Preserve the opening acquisition values and ownership documents for assets already held.

5. Capture 31 December balances for the first annual return and possible CBE.

For the broader first-year process, see Your First Brazilian Tax Return After Moving to Brazil. For the dividing line between pre-residence and resident periods, see Moved to Brazil Mid-Year: Which Income and Assets Must You Report?.

Leaving Brazil during 2026: the departure calendar continues into 2027

A permanent departure can end Brazilian tax residence from the departure date when the definitive-departure rules are correctly applied. A temporary departure can lead to non-residence only after the applicable 12-month period. The factual timeline must be established before selecting the filing dates.

For a permanent departure during 2026, the Communication of Definitive Departure is generally due by the last day of February 2027. The Definitive Departure Income Tax Return and final resident-period payment follow the deadline set for the next exercise. Confirm the 2027 date when Receita publishes the applicable annual rules rather than copying the 2026 deadline into the next year.

For departures that occurred in 2025, the 2026 communication deadline was 28 February and the definitive return deadline was 29 May. A person who missed either should review late regularization, prior annual returns and the tax treatment applied by Brazilian payers after departure.

Brazilian property deadlines: federal, state and municipal calendars

Property can create several different deadlines. They should not be combined into a single generic “property tax” date.

ObligationLevelCalendar point
DITR and ITR for rural propertyFederalDITR 2026 runs from 10 August to 30 September; the unique or first ITR quota is due 30 September
IPTU for urban propertyMunicipalDates, discounts and instalments depend on the municipality
ITBI on a property transferMunicipalEvent-specific and governed by the municipality
ITCMD on inheritance or giftsState or Federal DistrictDeadline depends on the state and the legal event
Income tax on a property gainFederalNormally calculated around the transaction and paid before the annual-return deadline
Tax on rental incomeFederalMonthly Carnê-Leão for applicable resident cases or withholding/definitive taxation for non-residents

A foreign owner may also need a CPF, a Brazilian representative, updated payer instructions and documents that support acquisition cost and improvements. An urban apartment does not create DITR merely because it is real estate; DITR concerns rural property.

Use one row for every recurring income stream, asset category and one-off transaction. Do not rely on a generic phone reminder labelled only “Brazil taxes”.

Worked examples

Example 1: remote employee moves to Brazil in June 2026

Emma continues to receive salary from a European employer after becoming a Brazilian tax resident on 15 June. Her calendar does not begin with IRPF 2027. She first separates salary received before and after 15 June, checks whether post-residence receipts require monthly Carnê-Leão, and pays any tax by the following-month deadlines. She saves her 31 December foreign account and investment balances for the first annual return and possible CBE analysis.

Example 2: resident holds US$1.3 million abroad on 31 December 2025

Daniel was a Brazilian tax resident and held qualifying foreign accounts, securities and a company interest worth US$1.3 million at the annual base date. He had two separate 2026 workstreams: annual CBE by 6 April and IRPF by 29 May if he met the annual return criteria. Entering the assets in IRPF did not replace CBE.

Example 3: property is sold in July

Sofia sells an asset in July and expects to deal with it in the following annual return. That is too late for the calendar review. She should calculate the gain, confirm any exemption and identify the applicable payment date shortly after the transaction. The next annual return reports and reconciles the transaction; it is not the normal first payment date.

Example 4: permanent departure occurred in October 2025

Michael left Brazil permanently in October 2025. His 2026 departure calendar included the communication by 28 February and the definitive return by 29 May. In September 2026 he discovers neither was filed and Brazilian rent continued to be treated as resident income. He should not simply wait until 2027. The residence position, late filings, payer treatment and any resident return already submitted need a coordinated review.

Example 5: foreign owner has Brazilian rural property

Ana lives outside Brazil but is the person required to file for a Brazilian rural property. She checks DITR 2026 rather than assuming that non-residence removes all property obligations. The filing period is 10 August to 30 September, and the unique or first ITR quota is due on 30 September.

What happens when a deadline is missed?

The answer depends on what was missed. A late annual return, unpaid monthly DARF, omitted CBE, late DITR and missed departure filing have different systems and penalties. The safest first step is to identify the obligation and period before making a payment or sending a replacement declaration.

1. Confirm whether the obligation actually applied.

2. Download the last filed return, receipt and account-status information.

3. Reconstruct the original figures from primary documents.

4. Calculate tax, interest and penalties through the correct official system.

5. File the missing original return or a complete rectifying return, as appropriate.

6. Keep the filing receipt and payment proof.

7. Review later years for figures inherited from the missed period.

Do not file an inaccurate resident return merely to change a CPF status or create a document for a bank. Likewise, do not pay a DARF generated from an unverified email or message. Confirm the liability inside the official Receita or BCB environment.

A return retained in malha requires a different procedural analysis. See Malha Fina for Foreigners: What a Receita Federal Notice Means and How to Respond.

Common calendar mistakes made by international taxpayers

1. Tracking only the annual IRPF deadline. Foreign income and gains can create monthly tax much earlier.

2. Assuming a CPF creates annual filing duties. CPF and tax residence are separate questions.

3. Waiting until 184 days in every case. Employment, visa status, permanent return or another event may start residence earlier.

4. Using the annual return to “fix” unpaid Carnê-Leão. Monthly calculations and DARFs may need to be reconstructed first.

5. Treating IRPF and CBE as the same declaration. They have different authorities, thresholds, data and deadlines.

6. Copying last year’s filing date. Receita and BCB publish dates for each exercise, and adjusted deadlines can differ.

7. Ignoring Brasília time. A date that is still open locally may already have closed in Brazil.

8. Using net bank deposits as taxable income. Gross income, deductions, withholding and currency conversion need separate support.

9. Forgetting state and municipal deadlines. ITCMD, IPTU and ITBI are not governed by one national calendar.

10. Failing to update Brazilian payers after departure. Resident withholding may continue incorrectly.

11. Leaving asset records until filing season. Foreign platforms may not preserve the exact December 31 values or acquisition history needed.

12. Waiting for a reminder from the government. The legal deadline can apply even when no email or portal notification is received.

Frequently asked questions

When was the Brazilian income tax return due in 2026?

IRPF 2026, covering calendar year 2025, was filed from 23 March to 29 May 2026. The online service closed at 23:59:59 Brasília time on the final day.

Do foreigners outside Brazil have a later IRPF deadline?

No. Receita’s 2026 guidance gave a person physically abroad the same 29 May deadline. Location outside Brazil does not create an automatic extension.

Does every foreigner with a CPF need to file IRPF?

No. A CPF is an identification number. The annual filing analysis depends on Brazilian tax residence and the filing criteria for the relevant year.

When is Carnê-Leão due?

For income subject to Carnê-Leão, the monthly calculation uses the month of receipt and any tax is generally due by the last business day of the following month.

If I moved to Brazil during 2026, when is my first annual return?

Your first annual return will normally be in the 2027 filing season if you meet a filing criterion, but applicable monthly obligations can begin from your 2026 residence-start date. The 2027 filing dates should be confirmed when Receita publishes them.

Is transferring my existing savings to Brazil a monthly taxable event?

A transfer between your own accounts is not automatically income, but you should retain evidence of the source, ownership and pre-existing balance. Earnings, gains or unexplained patrimonial increases require separate analysis.

What was the annual CBE deadline in 2026?

The annual CBE 2026, based on foreign assets held on 31 December 2025, could be filed from 15 February to 6 April 2026.

Is CBE included in the IRPF return?

No. CBE is a separate declaration to Banco Central. IRPF is filed with Receita Federal. The same asset may be relevant to both, but the forms and valuation instructions differ.

When is DITR 2026 due?

DITR 2026 runs from 10 August to 30 September 2026. It concerns people required to file for Brazilian rural property, not ordinary urban property.

When is a definitive-departure communication due?

For a permanent departure, the communication is generally sent from the departure date through the last day of February of the following calendar year. The definitive return has a separate deadline.

Can the IRPF balance be paid in instalments?

For IRPF 2026, the balance could be divided into up to eight monthly quotas, subject to minimum values. The first or unique quota was due 29 May; later quotas accrue the prescribed interest.

What if the stated deadline falls on a weekend?

Do not assume the date automatically moves in every system. Check the authority’s annual notice, live portal and tax agenda. The annual CBE 2026 deadline, for example, was published as 6 April rather than the standard 5 April closing date.

Do IPTU and ITCMD have national deadlines?

No. IPTU is municipal, while ITCMD is governed by the state or Federal District. The date depends on the location and, for ITCMD, the inheritance or gift event.

What should I do if I missed a 2026 deadline?

Identify the exact obligation, period and status first. Then use the correct late-filing or payment route. Filing or paying promptly is usually better than waiting for the next annual cycle, but the figures should be verified before submission.

Important information

This article provides general information and does not constitute individualized tax, legal or accounting advice. Brazilian treatment depends on the relevant dates, tax-residence status, type of income or asset, transaction documents, applicable treaty or reciprocity position, and rules in force for the period.

Deadlines and online systems can change. Confirm the current Receita Federal, Banco Central, state and municipal guidance before filing or paying. Advice from a professional qualified in another country may also be required for that country’s return, residence rules or foreign tax credit.
